Riding the bus today and seeing a car trying to beat the bus barely missing it. I wondered what is the hurry when driving, risking a life or a series of lives depending on who else is in the car and for what, to beat a red light risking life and limb? Simply to make up only a few minutes, to save a couple of ounces of that "Black Gold" that people pay a premium for. What I could not quite comprehend was the fact the car itself was a hybrid and the driver a lady and it looked like she had at least one child with her. And even with all that she still tries to beat the bus in turning onto the main street of Salinas, trying to beat a red light or something.
It really had me wondering, is saving Two Minutes off a short commute worthing risking all you know and love? Or was it simply a sign of a Sensory Overloaded Society? Perhaps it is just one more result of a society that seems to be more about speed then safety more about the interstate instead of following something like the previously known Route 66? When there was no rush, and the drive was for the enjoyment not for the speed.
